Welcome To 'Laine's Bake Shop!
We are a social enterprise food manufacturing company committed to catalyzing wealth in south and west side communities in Chicago. We accomplish this through the manufacture and sale of baked goods to build a scalable company that will create ownership opportunities (by transferring ownership through an employee stock ownership program) and generational wealth for our employees.
We have provided our delectable products to clients ranging from local restaurants and cafes to national chains such as Whole Foods and Starbucks. We focus on hiring from what we consider the hardest hit communities geographically and with a focus on hiring from chronically unemployed populations such as reentering citizens, recovering substance abusers, and the formerly homeless. We are partnering with Chicago organizations that help these individuals and provide them with job training and personal development programs.
Operations for our company are currently suspended due to the impacts of the pandemic. Our decision was based on health considerations for our team, and the impact the pandemic had on many of our customers. We are working to secure the resources necessary to relaunch this fall.
For starters, there are three ‘Laines. Lane Palmer, his daughter Elaine Rodgers, and her daughter Rachel Elaine Bernier-Green.
Rachel’s Grandpa Lane grew up in the Bronzeville and Oakland neighborhoods during their heydays. Grandpa Lane loves sharing stories and pictures of the neighborhood’s rich cultural and commercial history. Rachel and her husband Jaryd are now proud homeowners in the Oakland neighborhood.
Rachel’s mother Elaine introduced her to a love of baking. It all started with a brownie recipe that Elaine taught Rachel during a homeschool math lesson on fractions. Apparently, something clicked between the math and the baking because Rachel went on to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance before opening her own bakery!
People. Planet. Profits. We believe in investing in our neighborhood, sourcing ingredients and packaging responsibly, hiring locally, and giving back to worthy causes. Our success comes from investing in our people, our local communities, and our planet. That’s true profit.
